Authorities ID armed man fatally shot by police in South LA

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Police Department on Sunday released the name of a man shot by officers during a fight with another man in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles, along with additional details.

The shooting was reported at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Hyde Park and Crenshaw boulevards, where gang enforcement officers saw two men arguing. The suspect, 63-year-old James Tullous, had gotten out of a parked vehicle armed with a handgun, according to a police statement released Sunday.

When the officers went to intervene in the confrontation, Tullous fired one round from a handgun and the officers fired back, the LAPD said Sunday.

“Tullous was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground,” according to the statement. Officers provided medical aid to Tullous until Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the shooting scene and booked as evidence, the LAPD said.

“Force Investigation Division investigators determined that the encounter began with a verbal altercation, during which Tullous fired a round at the victim,” the LAPD said. The other man involved in the argument was not injured.

The shooting occurred at the site where a candlelight vigil turned violent when LAPD officers came under attack Tuesday night and at least eight patrol vehicles had their tires punctured.
