A bat that was found in a Boulder residence has tested positive for rabies. It is believed to have come into contact with at least one dog.
Boulder County Public Health stated in a release that it is possible the bat came into contact with a second dog.
Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, the release stated.
The department said the disease is commonly spread by a bite or scratch from an infected animal and exposure from bats may occur through tiny punctures that cannot be easily seen. A series of vaccines administered promptly after the bite or scratch can prevent illness, according to the release.
“Rabies isn’t limited to one area, and we want to avoid giving people a false sense of security,” Boulder County Public Health Environmental Health Specialist Carly Wilson stated in the release. “Even though this bat was found in the city of Boulder, residents throughout the county should take the same precautions to reduce their risk.”
The department asked anyone who believes they, a loved one or a pet has come into contact with a bat to call Boulder County Public Health immediately at 303-441-1564.
According to the release, rabies exposure most commonly occurs when people or pets come into contact with wildlife. Bats are often found under eaves, porch overhangs, shutters, or gutters. The department wrote that they should never be touched and encouraged locals not to try to remove one from their home or yard.
