Bears agree to terms with two second-round picks

At least two of the Bears’ second-round picks will be in attendance when rookies report to training camp Saturday. The Bears agreed to terms with tackle Ozzy Trapilo and defensive lineman Shemar Turner on their four-year rookie contracts, sources confirmed to the Sun-Times on Thursday.

Trapilo, a Boston College alum who was chosen 56^th overall, will compete with Braxton Jones, who is recovering from ankle surgery, at left tackle. Turner, the former Texas A&M star picked 62^nd, will be part of the rotation at defensive tackle.

No second-round pick in NFL history had received a fully guaranteed contract until the Texans gave one to receiver Jayden Higgins, the second pick of the round, in May. The Browns gave linebacker Carson Schwesinger, the first pick of Round 2, a fully guaranteed deal later that same week.

No other second-round pick across the NFL agreed to sign their contract for the next two months, hoping to negotiate for similar terms, until the 49ers inked Alfred Collins on Wednesday to loosen the logjam. Collins, the No. 43 overall pick, did not receive full guarantees in Year 3.

The two Bears won’t, either. Trapilo will get the first two years guaranteed and 62% of his third season guaranteed at signing, a source said. Turner will have his first two seasons guaranteed at signing, with 35% of Year 3 guaranteed.

Luther Burden, the seventh pick of Round 3 who will fight for the Bears’ No. 3 receiver job, remains the team’s last unsigned rookie. The Bears certainly want to reach a deal with Burden before the Saints come to terms with the man drafted one spot below him, quarterback Tyler Shough. Shough is expected to start as a rookie and is said to be pushing for guarantees similar to the round’s top two picks.

Bears rookies and quarterbacks report to training camp Saturday, with veterans arriving Tuesday. The team will hold its first training camp practice Wednesday.

The total price of each four-year rookie contract is codified by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, though the total guarantees vary depending on the round from which a player is plucked. Over four years, Trapilo is expected to make around $7.7 million and Turner $7.2 million, according to Over The Cap. Burden is slated to make $10.9 million.

The Bears signed five draft picks — all but their league-high three second-round selections—on May 8.
