When Bears general manager Ryan Poles said after the trade deadline he called teams about “all of the guys you would imagine just to see the availability,” that apparently included arguably the best pass rusher of this era: Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.
The Bears inquired about Garrett, ESPN reported, but were told he simply wasn’t available. Garrett backed down from an offseason trade request and signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension in March.
The only move Poles made at the deadline was trading for Browns backup defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, a deal that cost the Bears only a late-round pick swap.
Garrett, 29, leads the NFL with 11 sacks this season. He has 113½ in his nine-year career, all with the Browns, including 4½ in a 2021 game against the Bears.
Pass rush has been a struggle for the Bears the last four seasons, even with the 2023 acquisition of defensive end Montez Sweat. They’ve been hot lately, however, and have climbed to 18th in the league with 21 sacks.
The NFL filed a grievance asking the NFLPA to stop its annual team report cards, which grades clubs on everything from leadership to training-table food, per ESPN.

The bad news, though, is that they’re still missing safety Jaquan Brisker and linebacker T.J. Edwards.

Through 10 weeks this year, though, Williams has been sacked just 14 times, which ranks 30th in the NFL. His loss of 93 yards ranks 28th.
