Bears coach Ben Johnson saw plenty of good and bad in his team’s 19-17 win over the Vikings on Sunday and was much more eager to get to work on making corrections ahead of the upcoming game against the Steelers than to revel in standing atop the NFC North at 7-3.
“We’re far away from that,” he said of the playoff race.
Here are some other updates from Johnson:
– He’s not caught up in the injury news about Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who suffered “a slight break” in his non-throwing wrist, ESPN reported.
“Same as we always do,” Johnson said. “Each week we monitor that, just like they’ll be doing with us.”
The Bears have been through that twice recently with the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson and Bengals’ Joe Flacco.
– Johnson is now 10 months in as head coach and has the team running much closer to what his ideal vision is.
“The coaching staff certainly understands what I’m expecting more as we continue to go along through this season,” he said. “I really think we’re getting better. It’s more efficient. We’re able to get the players out of the building a little bit earlier in the day because we’re getting the work done in a better fashion. I don’t really self-reflect at this point. Maybe that’s something that I can do when the season’s over. It’s just trying to provide what our team needs to win the next ballgame.”
– The Bears didn’t get any sacks, but they intercepted two passes from Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy and their defensive pressure was a factor.
“You’re getting good pass rush,” Johnson said of the takeaways. “I don’t know that [Kevin Byard] gets that interception if Grady Jarrett’s not really on the lap of the quarterback there for that one. You’ve always got to take that into context. Those guys don’t get those stats necessarily when those things occur, yet they’re a big part of why that ball is being put in place like that.”
