Bears hope to bring CB Kyler Gordon back to practice in advance of playoff game

The Bears hope to bring slot cornerback Kyler Gordon back to practice this week to see if he’s able to play in Saturday’s playoff game against the rival Packers, coach Ben Johnson said Monday afternoon.

The defense needs help at slot corner after C.J. Gardner-Johnson was put into concussion protocol following a 19-16 loss to the Lions on Sunday.

Gordon could practice as early as the Bears’ walk-through Tuesday. He has missed 14 games with various injuries, most recently a groin problem that landed him on injured reserve for the second time this season. He has played only 117 snaps and none since Nov.  28, when he played two-thirds of the snaps against the Eagles. He has missed the minimum four games required of players on IR.

The Bears didn’t play cornerback Tyrique Stevenson at all Sunday. Nahshon Wright played every snap and Jaylon Johnson all but one at outside cornerback.

“We felt good about where Shonny and Jaylon were and wanted those guys to take the bulk of the snaps,” Ben Johnson said.

Wright gave up a whopping 118.8 passer rating when he was targeted and Jaylon Johnson allowed a 114.9 as the Bears played man coverage on 30 of Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s 42 passes. The Lions got receivers open with picks, rub routes and crossers. Jaylon Johnson said the Lions “like to attack the middle of the field, and we didn’t do a good enough job stopping them.”

“They just outschemed us, really,” safety Jaquan Brisker said. “Let’s be honest.”

Ben Johnson said the defense played well enough to win, even if the Bears gave up 433 yards, their fourth-most all season.

“The No. 1 objective is to limit their points,” he said.

Johnson has picked his spots to get fiery with the team about poor play. This seems like a good time to do it.
The NFL chose to lean into its burgeoning relationship with Prime Video’s owner, Amazon, granting the league’s longest-running rivalry to its newest weekly partner.
In retrospect, the victory against the Raiders was better than a blowout. It provided a template for an identity that would carry the Bears to their first NFC North title since 2018.
