Bears LB T.J. Edwards has hand surgery

Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards had surgery to fix a broken hand and is still dealing with a hamstring injury that has bothered him all year, coach Ben Johnson said Friday.

Edwards hasn’t practiced all week. While the Bears will issue an injury report later Friday, it seems unlikely he’ll play Sunday afternoon against the Giants at Soldier Field.

The Bears won’t put him on injured reserve, which would cost him four games, Johnson said. They plan to put a clubbed cast on his hand whenever he returns to the field. Edwards, who signed a contract extension this offseason, has 31 tackles this year.

Edwards missed the Bears’ opener because of his hamstring and left the second game early. He didn’t return until Week 5 against the Commanders.

With Edwards out, the Bears have leaned on Noah Sewell to play middle linebacker. He’s been the team’s strong-side linebacker in base packages this season.
