Bears matriarch Virginia McCaskey advances in Hall of Fame’s contributor class

 

Virginia McCaskey, the Bears’ matriarch until her death in February, was one of 21 contributors to advance in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s selection process.

The Hall’s contributor blue-ribbon committee was tasked to select 20 people but the rules allowed for more in the case of a tie. Later this month, the committee will whittle the list to nine before narrowing it down to one finalist for the 2026 class.

The subcommittee is made up of one football historian and eight members of the Hall’s regular selection committee.

McCaskey inherited the Bears from her father, founder George S. Halas, in 1983.

Other candidates to induction as a contributor include Titans founder/owner Bud Adams, TV producer Roone Arledge, announcer, Howard Cosell, voiceover artist John Facenda, scouting service founder Mike Giddings, Canton Bulldogs owner Ralph hay, former GM “Bucko” Kilroy, executive Don Klosterman, scout Eddie Kotal, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, football operations director John McVay, Cowboys founder Clint Murchison, Steelers vice president Art Rooney Jr., head coach Clark Shaughnessy, Elias Sports Bureau owner Seymour Swihoff, executive Amy Trask, scout Jack Vainisi, scout Lloyd Wells, scout and executive John Wooten and executive Buddy Young,

Shaughnessy was a Bears assistant from 1951-62.
