Bears morning report: Ben Johnson gives injury updates, revisits booting 1st-team offense

Bears coach Ben Johnson laughed at the attention he got for pulling quarterback Caleb Williams and the first-string offensive off the field after some sloppy pre-snap mechanics in the first practice of training camp, saying that was “not the case,” but acknowledged Thursday morning he was unhappy with how the unit was doing.

“It is what it is, you know?” Johnson said. “We’ve got to end up executing, getting in and out of the huddle a certain way and it wasn’t that way. And so we’ll be better today.”

When asked if that was an issue specifically with Williams, Johnson said, “It’s everybody. We’re learning, we’re growing. There was some things from the springtime expected to carry over. That was probably one. We just don’t have any tolerance for it anymore.”

Johnson also said the team had hoped to get rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III on the field for the start of training camp, but he is still recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in the offseason. The outlook is still that he’ll be back in “just a few days,” Johnson said, rather than weeks.

The Bears have another injury concern in their rookie class as fellow second-rounder Shemar Turner, a defensive lineman, hurt his ankle late in practice Wednesday.

Cornerback Zah Frazier, a fifth-round pick, has missed the first two practices after being excused for personal reasons, Johnson said.

The Bears will practice four consecutive days to open training camp, then take Sunday off. They’ll practice Aug. 3 at Soldier Field and host a joint practice with the Dolphins on Aug. 8 before beginning the preseason schedule against them two days later.

The second-round pick has a hamstring injury.

The Jets said he dislocated a toe and won’t miss significant time.
The Bears’ new head coach is a whatever-it-takes play-caller.
