Bears morning report: Offensive line competition heats up with decision possibly coming soon

The next two days of practice might be pivotal in the competition to be the Bears‘ starting left tackle. They’ll practice this morning and Thursday before taking a day off.

The competition between Braxton Jones, Ozzy Trapilo and Kiran Amegadjie for the job is ongoing, and all three continue to get work with the first team. Bears coach Ben Johnson said he’s getting clarity on that battle each day and will reassess Friday.

“It takes time for the five [starters] to gel,” he said. “The sooner we can identify who those five are going to be, the quicker we will be at our top strength.”

The other four spots are locked in: left guard Joe Thuney, center Drew Dalman, right guard Jonah Jackson and right tackle Darnell Wright. If Jones doesn’t win the left tackle spot, that would leave Wright as the only starter returning from last season.

Jones, Trapilo and Amegadjie are all expected to make the roster regardless of who takes the starting spot.

Deeper on the depth chart, interior offensive lineman Doug Kramer was back Tuesday after hurting his foot Saturday.

The second starting cornerback job might be Tyrique Stevenson’s to lose, but it’s not his yet.
Williams has been impressed by the first-round pick.
Depending on who wins the left tackle job, the Bears could begin the season with only right tackle Darnell Wright as a returning starter from 2024.
