The Bears went to Northwestern Beach in Evanston on Monday and then had their most physical practice in at least a decade on Tuesday. Thursday will be no day at the beach — but it probably won’t be too much like Tuesday, either.
The Bears will practice at 11 a.m. Thursday to prepare for a joint practice Friday against the Dolphins. Coach Ben Johnson hinted that he will treat the joint practice with more emphasis than he will the game the two teams will play against each other on Sunday at Soldier Field.
Johnson met with his staff Wednesday to work toward a plan about which players to play Sunday.
“Just because you play in the preseason, sometimes you take reps away from what you’d like to do before or after the game — going into the games or coming out of the game,” Johnson said Tuesday. “We’ve been very strategic with trying to maximize our reps, and we felt like offensively, defensively, the amount of reps that we’re getting is really what we need right now as a team so that we’re learning, we’re growing.
“Maybe those are out on the grass, under the lights, maybe those are in practice settings.”
When it comes to quarterbacks running, coaches — particularly first-time head coaches — have to strike a balance between aggression and caution.
