With less than three weeks until the Bears will begin their practice week for the Sept. 8 season opener against the Vikings, they’re shifting their focus from installing the offense and defense to preparing for specific opponents.
For quarterback Caleb Williams, the upcoming joint practice with the Bills and the preseason game against them will be a dry run for how he’ll work during game weeks. They’ll go through that with him again next week ahead of the preseason finale against the Chiefs. After that, the Bears likely will get an early jump on prepping for the Vikings — that might even happen before final roster cuts Aug. 26.
Weekly film study is an area Williams and the Bears are targeting for improvement this season after he had little guidance as a rookie.
“The specific things really that we’re getting into now [are] preparing for specific opponents,” offensive coordinator Declan Doyle said this week. “A lot of the improvements happen within the meeting room, [such as] his process of, ‘How am I going to study this team? How am I going about executing the game plan that we’re going to put together for a specific team?’
“Buffalo, a totally different style of defense coming in. Really, that’s the biggest thing that we’re looking for as a staff is him continuing to develop and handle that classroom work.”
The Bears are more than three weeks into training camp at this point, in addition to the offseason practices and meetings they’ve done, so it’s certainly time to be doing this. When they hit the fields at Halas Hall today, it’ll be their 15th practice since reporting.
Williams will make his preseason debut Sunday. In a way, so will Ben Johnson.

The good news is there should be enough opportunities to go around. Johnson’s Lions led the NFL in plays run last season, and he’s a balanced play-caller.
