The Bears put nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon on injured reserve Saturday, ruling him out for the rest of the regular season.
He already had been declared out for Sunday’s game against the Browns at Soldier Field.
The Bears did not call up a practice-squad wide receiver, which bodes well for receiver Rome Odunze’s chances of playing against the Browns. Coach Ben Johnson said Friday that Odunze, who has been dealing with a chronic foot issue, was trending in the right direction to play. He’s officially questionable after being practice participant all week.
The Bears also promoted running back Brittain Brown and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin to the practice squad. Both figure to contribute on special teams.
Gordon’s season has been a nightmare, and this is his second time going on IR. He has played just three games and has seven tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.
He missed the first four games with a hamstring injury, then played two and went on IR with a calf injury. The Bears activated him for their Nov. 28 game against the Eagles, and he was fine in practice the next week, but injured his groin muscle while warming up at Lambeau Field for the Packers game on Sunday.
Gordon was one of the Bears’ best defensive players over his first three seasons and earned a three-year, $40 million contract extension in April. It kicks in next year.
Per NFL rules, every team is allowed eight return trips from the IR — and two more if they qualify for the playoffs.
