Bears rookie Ozzy Trapilo to start with LT Theo Benedet out

Bears coach Ben Johnson described the Steelers‘ scary defensive ends as a bunch of “werewolves.”

The Bears will try to stop them with a rookie Sunday. Ozzy Trapilo, one of the team’s three second-round picks, will start at left tackle Sunday at Soldier Field after the team ruled Theo Benedet out with a quad injury.

Trapilo has never started an NFL game and has spent the last month being used regularly as an extra blocker. The Bears called up Jordan McFadden from the practice squad Saturday to provide extra cover at the position.

The Steelers boast seven-time Pro Bowl player T.J. Watt at outside linebacker. Fellow edge rusher Alex Highsmith was ruled out Sunday.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was ruled inactive after coach Mike Tomlin said earlier in the morning he wouldn’t start because of a broken left wrist.

The Bears also ruled out third-string quarterback Case Keenum, receiver Jahdae Walker, running back Travis Homer, linebacker Noah Sewell, linebacker T.J. Edwards and defensive tackle Jonathan Ford.

They’ll play without all three starting linebackers Sunday and figure to spend most of the day in nickel coverage with D’Marco Jackson and rookie Ruben Hyppolite II at linebacker.

Rodgers broke his left wrist a week ago.
Rodgers, who hasn’t played at Soldier Field since 2022, suffered a small fracture in his non-throwing wrist last week.
The Bears also put backup running back Roschon Johnson on IR ahead of the Steelers game.
