Bears rule out top WR Rome Odunze shortly before kickoff vs. Browns after he aggravates foot injury

Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze is out Sunday against the Browns after aggravating his foot injury. He initially was declared active, but hurt his foot in pre-game warmups and was scratched shortly before kickoff. He will miss his second consecutive game.

Odunze is the team’s leading wide receiver with 44 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns.

The Bears had a similar issue last week against the Packers in which cornerback Kyler Gordon was set to play, but hurt his groin muscle in warmups and ended up going on injured reserve.

The Bears are thinner at quarterback against the Browns after adding backup Tyson Bagent to the injury report with an illness the morning of the game and ruling him out.

That’s not a significant concern as long as starter Caleb Williams gets through the game healthy, and he has played every snap other than Bagent taking over at the end of a Week 2 blowout loss to the Lions.

The only other quarterback on the roster is 37-year-old Case Keenum, who was signed primarily to mentor Williams and Bagent and hasn’t been active on game day. Keenum hasn’t played in a game since starting for the Texans almost two years ago.

A recent rule change allowed teams to have a designated emergency quarterback who is inactive on game day, but available to play if all the active quarterbacks leave with injuries. Keenum has been that player for the Bears all season, but hasn’t been needed.

Here are the Bears’ inactives:

QB Tyson Bagent (illness)
RB Travis Homer (ankle)
WR Jahdae Walker
WR Rome Odunze (foot – technically active, but ruled out)

DE Dominique Robinson
LB Ruben Hyppolite (shoulder)
DL Jonathan Ford
