Blue Island police pursuit ends with 4-vehicle crash that injures 9 including boy in West Pullman

A police pursuit in Blue Island ended on Chicago’s Far South Side when an SUV ran a red light and plowed into three vehicles including a Pace bus injuring nine people Wednesday night.

Around 7:20 p.m., the SUV, being driven by a 31-year-old man with a 34-year-old male passenger, was going east on Vermont Street near the 12700 block of South Halsted Street when the driver ran a red light and struck two cars and a Pace bus, Chicago police said.

Officers from the Blue Island Police Department were attempting to a stop the SUV when the vehicle fled and the officers pursued, ABC7Chicago reported.

The two men in the SUV were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where they were in critical condition, police said.

A third man in the SUV was also taken to Christ where he was in good condition, officials said.

A 27-year-old woman driving the sedan was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she was in good condition, officials said. A 6-year-old boy who was a passenger in the sedan was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital where he was also in good condition.

Three women on the bus, 32, 62 and 66, were taken to Roseland Hospital in good condition, authorities said. A fourth woman on the bus, 46, was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good condition. Police initially said no injuries were reported on the bus.

Occupants of another sedan declined medical attention, police said.

Chicago Fire Department officials initially said four of the nine crash victims hospitalized were in critical condition.

No citations or charges have been announced by police.
