A baby has been found dead in a field in Greater Manchester.

No one has yet come forward with any information about the baby, according to police, who were alerted by a dog walker this afternoon.

The body was found in a grassy area around Ashtons Fields, behind an industrial park just off Cleggs Lane and Ravenscraig Road.

Police have been down there since 1pm on Wednesday, but they do not yet know the baby’s age, identity, or how long it had been there.

Speaking at a press conference at the scene this evening, Chief Superintendent Neil Blackwood said: ‘Tragically, today, we have found what we believe to be the remains of a young baby on Ravenscraig Road in Salford.

‘We have a scene in place, and you will likely see an increased presence of officers in the local area while we carry out enquiries to understand the circumstances.

‘At this stage, we are following several lines of enquiry, and we are working with local partner agencies to understand who this baby could be, how long they have been here, and how they have sadly died – we are now calling this baby, Baby A.

‘All of this is extremely sensitive, and this investigation needs to be handled with the utmost care it deserves, and it is going to take time.’

One local resident said they ‘felt sick’ at the news, telling MEN: ‘There’s no cameras. Anyone can access it anytime they like.

‘They need to do something, I’ve always said something was gonna end up here and it was gonna be really serious.’

Police and an ambulance have been on the scene since around 1pm on Wednesday.

Their presence has been focused on a grassy area surrounded by trees just off an industrial park next to the M61 motorway.

A forensics tent has been set up right by the entrance to Ashtons Field on Cleggs Lane, just a few metres from the motorway bridge.

Numerous residential streets are located nearby.
