Boy, 11, shot walking with relatives in Englewood drive-by: ‘Daddy, I got shot’
An 11-year-old autistic boy who was walking home from a park with relatives was shot in a drive-by Tuesday afternoon in Englewood.
The group had left Hamilton Park and was on a sidewalk about 4:40 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Union Avenue when they heard three gunshot coming from about a block away and saw a red SUV with tinted windows speeding away west, according to a Chicago police report.
The boy was hit in the upper right shoulder, police said.
“He wasn’t crying or nothing,” the boy’s father, who didn’t give his name, said. “He just said, ‘Daddy, I got shot.'”
The rest of the group, a 20-year-old woman, a 2-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old girl, ran for cover under a nearby porch and the boy’s sister called their father, the report and family said.
“She was hysterical,” the boy’s father said of his daughter when she called him. “She was crying and upset, she felt like it was her fault. But I told her don’t worry, stuff like that happens all the time.”
Police responding to a shots fired call spotted the father who told him his son was shot and officers placed a tourniquet on the wound until paramedics got there and took him to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
The boy was still hospitalized at Comer but could be released as early as Wednesday, his father said.
“He’s very gentle and talks to everybody,” the boy’s father said. “He’s just 11 years old but he’s a big guy, you’d think he was 16, 17.”
No arrests have been made.
