Boy, 12, struck and killed by DUI driver in Winnetka, police say

A 12-year-old boy was hit by a car and killed while attempting to cross a Winnetka street Monday morning, Dec. 22, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, authorities said.

Los Angeles police responded to Saticoy Street and Winnetka Avenue about 2:50 a.m., said Officer David Cuellar, a LAPD spokesman.

The driver, in a sedan, was traveling eastbound on Saticoy when he struck the child, who was not in a crosswalk, Cuellar said. The driver remained at the scene and was arrested.

The Nissan sedan had damage to the passenger side of the hood and windshield. A posted sign shows a 40-mph speed limit.

It was not known why the boy was out at that hour, Cuellar said.

The LAPD’s Valley Traffic Bureau was investigating the crash.
