Boy, 17, shot in park near Mather High School on the Northwest Side

A 17-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting Tuesday near Mather High School in the West Ridge neighborhood.

The boy was in a car about 3:20 p.m. in the 5900 block of North California Avenue when someone approached him and fired shots, striking his left arm, Chicago police said.

He was taken to Evanston Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said.

Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th), whose ward includes that area, said the boy is a student at Mather High School and that the shooting happened around the time of school dismissal. He also said the shots were reported at Mather Park, adjacent to the school.

“Staff and students were immediately brought back into the building and the school was placed under soft lockdown,” Vasquez said in a notice to constituents. “CPD responded, confirmed there was no threat to the school, lifted the lockdown and stayed on site to support during the rest of dismissal.”

Officers will be present during the school’s dismissal “until further notice,” Vasquez added. The Chicago Public Schools crisis team also will be at the school Wednesday to support students and staff.

No one is in custody, and Area 3 detectives are investigating.
