Boy mistakenly dresses up as Elvis instead of an Elf for his school nativity

A nine-year-old boy became the star of his school concert appearing in a full Elvis Presley outfit - after a family mix-up over his casting role. Oscar Wilkins had been given the role of Elvis the Elf in the production performed over two days at his primary school last week . His bemused family said he had falled to mention the 'elf element' and without a suspicious mind sought a costume for the Graceland star - and only realised the error when he stepped out on stage. But instead of being all shook up, Oscar embraced his starring role and found the whole thing hilarious. And sister Jade Smith, 28, said the audience couldn't help falling in love with the obsurdity of it all. Photo released 09/12/2025

Audiences at a school nativity were left in stitches after a little boy mistakenly dressed as the King of Rock, rather than an elf.

Nine-year-old Oscar Wilkins, from Aberdare, Wales, had been given the role of ‘Elvis the Elf’ in the production at his primary school last week, but his family said he failed to mention that Elvis was an elf.

They then sought a costume for the Graceland star – and only realised the error when he stepped out on stage.

Oscar embraced his starring role and found the whole thing hilarious, with his sister, Jade Smith, 28, saying the audience couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

‘He came home from school, and all the children had a bit of paper telling what they were in the concert,’ she said.

‘His letter said a sparkly Elvis costume. It did not say Elvis the Elf, so we all just stupidly thought it was Elvis Presley.’

In a previous year, Oscar had been cast as an alien, which is why his family didn’t question the role.

‘We asked him if he was sure he meant Elvis, and he said yes with a sparkly costume. He did not mention anything about an elf,’ she said.

‘The only thing he was not happy with was that his costume was not sparkly enough. We sent him to school in the wrong costume, and they all saw the funny side.’

Oscar’s parents, Stephen and Sarah, only realised their mistake during the first performance of the nativity at Penrhiwpeier Primary School.

Mum Sarah said: ‘Out of 12 kids, they were all dressed as elves except for Oscar. It was so funny. A week before, they had all met up in costume for a dress rehearsal, but didn’t tell us anything was wrong.

“It was no drama, though. Oscar embraced it all and loved that people were all laughing at him. He really enjoyed all the attention.’

The family said they thought the King of Rock and Roll might have been woven into the storyline, but there was no relation to Elvis Presley in the nativity.

‘There was no encore of any of Elvis’ hits – I thought they might have done some sort of Christmas Elvis song – but it turned out he was just a very extravagantly dressed elf,’ Sarah added.

Jade said Oscar’s reaction to it all had meant everyone had seen the funny side.

‘You never want a child to feel awkward, but Oscar totally embraced it, and that helped us all see the funny side of it. He’s still got the outfit and has now been introduced to Elvis’ music. He loves older music anyway, so we can see him becoming a bit of a fan.’
