Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up nominated for Pacific Classic at Del Mar

Fierceness, the runner-up in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, has been nominated for the Aug. 30 Pacific Classic at Del Mar by trainer Todd Pletcher.

Meanwhile, White Abarrio will not be shipping west for the premier event of the Del Mar season, racing secretary David Jerkens said,

Nominations close Thursday for the Pacific Classic, although the availability of Preakness and Haskell Stakes champion Journalism will not be known until after the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes runner-up works out Saturday morning at Del Mar.

Jerkens said “approximately a half dozen” nominations have already been received.

Fierceness, a 4-year-old son of City of Light, won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2023 at Santa Anita and was named the Champion Juvenile of 2023. The following May, Fierceness finished 15th in the field of 20 in the Kentucky Derby after being the 5-2 morning-line favorite. He returned to Churchill Downs this May and won the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes.

He has spent the summer at Saratoga in New York, where he finished second in the Metropolitan Mile and fifth in the Whitney Stakes. Fierceness, who is currently seventh in the Breeders’ Cup rankings, has six wins, two second-plrace finishes and a third in 12 career starts.
