A US politician is pictured smiled broadly next to his wife and a woman he allegedly had an affair with, and his mistress’ British husband flashing peace signs behind them.

Ten months after the seemingly gleeful photo was taken, the US politician, Lee Vogler, is hospitalized with 60% of his body burned.

The British man, Michael Buck-Hayes, 29, is accused of dousing Vogler with petrol and setting him on fire in his office in July, in a jealous rage over the affair with his wife, Mary, the Daily Mail reported.

Buck-Hayes, who apparently blames Vogler for breaking up his four-year marriage, appeared in court this week.

The Brit told police that ‘he set the person on fire who had an affair with his wife’, it emerged in a court in Virginia earlier this week.

An affair between Vogler and Mary has not been proven.

But Mary filed for divorce from Buck-Hayes, of Devon, two weeks before the Brit allegedly set Vogler aflame.

Buck-Hayes has been charged with attempted first-degree murder as well as aggravated malicious wounding.

He is under psychiatric care at Central State Hospital and awaits a psychological evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

Buck-Hayes could face life in prison if convicted.
