The Broncos and Sean Payton are reuniting with a familiar face.
Denver has signed wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey off the New York Giants’ practice squad, agent Jimmy Gould confirmed to The Denver Post on Wednesday. Humphrey spent two years with the Broncos between 2023 and 2024 as a key run-blocker in Payton’s offense, and caught a career-best 31 passes for 293 yards in 2024.
Gould told The Post that Broncos general manager George Paton called him on Wednesday morning and said Humphrey’s excited about the reunion with Denver and Payton, who also coached Humphrey for two seasons with the New Orleans Saints. The Broncos made clear, Gould said, that Humphrey will play this Sunday in a key matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Denver originally offered Humphrey a one-year deal to return this past offseason, but the receiver went to New York to explore a bigger opportunity. Humphrey spent the majority of the season on the Giants’ practice squad, but played a key role in New York’s October upset of the Eagles, catching four passes for 55 yards on eight targets.
He also played 74 snaps in the Giants’ Week 7 loss to the Broncos. The 6-foot-4 Humphrey knows Payton’s system and will likely see time against the Chiefs as a run-blocker after playing over 40% of his offensive snaps in that role for Denver in 2023 and 2024.
The signing fills an empty spot on the 53-man roster after Denver moved linebacker Karene Reid to injured reserve with a hamstring injury on Tuesday. The Broncos are now carrying six wideouts on the active roster and normally take five on gamedays, indicating Trent Sherfield — the team’s WR5 and a run-blocking specialist — could be inactive against Kansas City.
