The Browns plan for their third different quarterback to be the last one they use this season.
Rookie Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback the rest of the year, including Sunday at Soldier Field, coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday.
Sanders, 23, earned the extended opportunity by improving in each of his three starts, Stefanski said. In his best game of the season Sunday, a 31-29 loss to the two-win Titans, he went 23-for-42 for 364 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a 97.7 passer rating.
“I feel good about where his development is heading,” Stefanski said. “He knows there are always going to be plays that he can be better at and those type of things, but he’s very intentional about getting better each and every game he’s out there.”
Sanders, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, starred at Colorado playing under his father, then became the most notorious quarterback in this year’s NFL draft when he dropped all the way to the fifth round. The Browns (3-10) drafted him 144th overall and eventually traded Kenny Pickett to the Raiders and Joe Flacco to the Bengals. Last month, Sanders replaced rookie Dillon Gabriel, whom the Browns drafted in the third round.
“They’re a team now that has named their starting quarterback, and they’re starting to push the ball downfield more,” Bears linebacker D’Marco Jackson said. “I feel like he’s a very solid quarterback and he’s got a lot of potential.”
Williams made some special plays in the loss to the Packers on Sunday, but also was erratic in some of the basics. The Bears need him to be steady for them to make noise in the postseason.
