Building collapses after car smashes into takeaway during police chase

A takeaway shop was left in ruins after a car being chased by police ploughed into the building.

The front of Heywood Star in Heywood, Rochdale completely collapsed following the crash in the early hours of Sunday.

Police said they had been called to a disturbance at a house in the nearby town of Bury.

A man in his 30s fled the scene in a car and officers chased after him through Bury and Heywood until he collided with the takeaway in Bridge Street.

A man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving and threats to kill, Greater Manchester Police said.

He was then taken to hospital for treatment. 

Bridge Street was closed off yesterday, with a silver car seen crushed under bricks and debris.

Council officials were at the scene, with an investigation concerning the safety of the building ongoing.

They were seen moving people away from the area due to fears the structure was unstable.

Diggers were called in to clear up the rubble.

A police spokesperson said yesterday: ‘At around 3.50am this morning (Sunday 28 September), we responded to reports of an ongoing disturbance at an address on Walmersley Road in Bury.

‘Upon police arrival a vehicle made off resulting in a pursuit utilising specialist tactics.

‘The suspect vehicle travelled towards Heywood where it collided with a building on Bridge Street in Heywood, Rochdale.

“The driver of the vehicle – a man in his 30s – was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving and threats to kill, before being taken to hospital for an injury to his arm.

‘Investigations are ongoing. Officers are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and assist their investigation.’
