Bulls’ Josh Giddey hoping clean-up surgery allows time to clean up game

Josh Giddey had a lengthy list of offseason priorities he wanted to work on, including his shooting.

“Off the bounce stuff is probably going to be the next step that I want to get into more,” Giddey said last month when discussing the holes in his game he wanted to continue to patch up. “It doesn’t mean I’ll be coming this Kyrie Irving-esque (player) but just being able to keep the defense honest.”

Atop of everything he discussed, however, the Bulls guard just wanted to get healthy and has taken steps to do that.

Dealing with right ankle and hamstring issues throughout the 2025-26 campaign, the team announced on Wednesday that Giddey underwent a right ankle arthroscopy that will sideline him from basketball activities for the next three months.

Not ideal for working on the game in the offseason but also a bump in the road that should still have him up and running by mid-August, as the team also indicated that he was expected to be completely ready for the start of training camp.

Giddey averaged 17 points, 9.1 assists and 8.3 rebounds for the Bulls last season but also played in just 54 games – his fewest since his rookie season. Most of the missed time was because of ankle and hamstring issues.
