Bulls’ Josh Giddey hoping clean-up surgery allows time to clean up game

Josh Giddey had a lengthy list of offseason priorities he wanted to work on, including his shooting.

“Off the bounce stuff is probably going to be the next step that I want to get into more,” Giddey said last month when discussing the holes in his game he wanted to continue to patch up. “It doesn’t mean I’ll be coming this Kyrie Irving-esque (player) but just being able to keep the defense honest.”

Atop of everything he discussed, however, the Bulls guard just wanted to get healthy and has taken steps to do that.

Dealing with right ankle and hamstring issues throughout the 2025-26 campaign, the team announced on Wednesday that Giddey underwent a right ankle arthroscopy that will sideline him from basketball activities for the next three months.

Not ideal for working on the game in the offseason but also a bump in the road that should still have him up and running by mid-August, as the team also indicated that he was expected to be completely ready for the start of training camp.

Giddey averaged 17 points, 9.1 assists and 8.3 rebounds for the Bulls last season but also played in just 54 games — his fewest since his rookie season. Most of the missed time was because of ankle and hamstring issues.

With only a 20.3% chance to jump into the top 4 of Sunday’s draft lottery, the Bulls did just that, hitting on No. 4. A huge get for new executive Bryson Graham, known for his ability to land top talent. The Bulls will now have No. 4 and No. 15 in the first round.
The Sunday draft lottery will be huge for Graham and the franchise, especially with two picks in the top 15 of a loaded 2026 draft class. Graham has already shown his hand a bit on what kind of player he is looking for as the rebuild is underway.
It was an introductory presser that started off with an apology and ended with promise as Bulls team president Michael Reinsdorf introduced new executive vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham on Wednesday.
