Bulls make roster changes official, but what about guard Josh Giddey?

The Bulls wanted to take a “methodical” approach to the offseason roster build and they weren’t kidding.

With NBA teams allowed to officially announce free agent signings and deals on Sunday, the Bulls jumped in with the Tre Jones re-signing, as well as making the Lonzo Ball to Cleveland for Isaac Okoro trade official, leaving one big unanswered question still out there: What about Josh Giddey?

A source told the Sun-Times over the weekend that while the team and Giddey’s camp were still conducting positive discussions on the restricted free agent, it hasn’t changed the fact that the point guard would still like to get the Jalen Suggs contract of $30 million per.

Suggs was selected fifth overall in that 2021 draft class by the Magic, while Giddey was sixth. Orlando extended their floor general last offseason at five years, $150.5 million. While both players have had some growing pains and setbacks along the way, Giddey and his representation feel that’s where he’s also slotted.

That was the number Giddey threw out at the Bulls last fall and the team opted to wait. A stellar second half of the season, however, played in his favor.

He can receive an offer from another team and the Bulls would have the option to match it, but with very little free money floating around it’s a bad summer to be testing the market.

As for what the Bulls did get done, Jones stays with the Bulls at three years, $24 million, while Okoro will have an opportunity to reboot his career, while staying in the division.

Latest on the Bulls
The Celtics, Knicks and Pacers have each suffered big hits to the roster or coaching staff since the regular-season ended, leaving an opening. Some teams have done their best to slow-play that, while others are attempting to kick the door down.
NBA
The four-year, $285 million extension would give him the highest single-season average salary in NBA history.
With the free-agent negotiating period opening Monday night, the Bulls wasted little time re-signing Jones.
