Burbank developing 4-acre solar energy and battery project atop airport parking structure

Burbank Water and Power has broken ground on what officials say will be the city’s largest solar energy and battery storage project.

The system — a 2.4-megawatt solar array — will be installed on the rooftop of the parking structure at the Hollywood Burbank Airport’s Regional Intermodal Transportation Center, according to BWP. The system will be paired with a four-hour lithium-ion battery to store excess energy for use during peak demand.

The rooftop installation will span 174,000 square feet — about four acres — and include 4,260 American-made solar panels, officials said. All energy generated will serve the Burbank community directly.

“It is special to have this resource here in our community,” Mandip Samra, general manager of Burbank Water and Power, said in a statement following a Thursday groundbreaking ceremony.

“Connecting to zero-carbon energy generated outside of Burbank requires access to transmission lines, which take an average of 10 years to build. This project gets BWP one step closer to meeting our zero-carbon energy supply goal by 2040, five years earlier than mandated by the state of California.”

Battery storage is considered key to maximizing solar output, which is otherwise limited to daylight hours. By storing excess energy, the system can help reduce strain on the grid and prevent outages during high-usage periods, officials said.

The project is expected to be completed by December.
