Burglar on bicycle targeted over 30 North Hollywood food spots, prosecutors say

Targeting North Hollywood eateries in the middle of the night, a man biked around and stole money and property from various restaurants over a month-long period. A suspect now has been charged with 36 felony counts, the Los Angeles County District Attorney announced.

Juan Montes, 26, of North Hollywood is accused of riding a bike around the East San Fernando Valley and breaking into eateries, stealing money and property and sometimes damaging businesses in the process.

The break-ins, which largely happened in the middle of the night, began in October and continued until Nov. 15, when Montes was arrested after police spotted him cycling just after four alleged burglaries had taken place. In total, 36 businesses were targeted, prosecutors said.

Montes has been charged with 33 felony counts of second-degree commercial burglary, one felony count of attempted second-degree commercial burglary and two counts of felony vandalism involving more than $400 in damage. He faces over 26 years in state prison if convicted as charged.

Montes pleaded not guilty on Nov. 18 and is being held on $1.825 million bail, according to the district attorney’s office.
