A Chicago police officer discharged his gun after a vehicle involved in the burglary of a GameStop ran into him Thursday morning at a Northwest Side strip mall, leading to a chase and a crash five miles away in East Village.
No one was shot or badly hurt and the burglars got away.
The incident unfolded around 4:25 a.m., as 17th District officers noticed multiple armed individuals burglarizing the GameStop, 2929 W. Addison St. in the Addison Mall, Chicago police said.
The burglars got into a white Chrysler sedan and a red Jeep SUV and ran into a responding officer as they fled, police said. The officer was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
As the officer was hit by the vehicle, he fired his weapon, authorities said. There were no reports of anyone being struck by gunfire.
Responding officers pursued the sedan and SUV, but ended the chase after they were hit by another vehicle at Chicago Avenue and Wood Streets that was unrelated to the burglary, police and radio scanner traffic reported.
As officers relayed information to OEMC dispatchers, they gave updates as the pursuit quickly developed.
“We’re about to go downtown,” one officer said to a dispatcher as they followed the cars south into the city and the East Village neighborhood. No one was injured in that crash.
The burglars were not in custody and the specifics of the incident were being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
The officer or officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days, officials said.
Anyone with information on the incident should call COPA at 312-746-3609.
