California man stabs dad to death with scissors, police fatally shoot him, authorities say

A son apparently stabbed his father to death with scissors in Lake Balboa on Wednesday morning, Dec. 3, then was fatally shot by Los Angeles police, authorities said.

Around 8:10 a.m. officers responded to a home in the 17200 block of Valerio Street for a report of a man experiencing a mental-health crisis who had previously been violent toward family members, police said.

When officers arrived, they heard a fight inside the residence.

They forced entry and found the adult son assaulting his father. An officer-involved shooting occurred, and the son was struck by gunfire and taken into custody, police said.

Officers provided aid to the suspect and the victim, who was suffering from apparent stab wounds. Paramedics pronounced both the father, believed to be 62-years-old, and the 40-year-old son dead at the scene, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz said.

A pair of scissors believed to have been used in the assault was taken as evidence, police said.
