The Chargers on Tuesday acquired outside linebacker Odafe Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round selection, a move designed to provide depth while Khalil Mack is sidelined.
Oweh had a career-high 10 sacks during the 2024 season, his fourth with the Ravens after they drafted him in the first round from Penn State in 2021. However, he failed to record a sack in five games this season with the injury-riddled Ravens, who have started 1-4.
Oweh, 26, has only 10 tackles (five solo) so far in 2025.
Mack was placed on injured reserve after dislocating his left elbow during the Chargers’ victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2. He is eligible to return from IR for a game against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 19. Tuli Tuipulotu has been the Chargers’ top pass rusher in his absence.
Tuipulotu has four sacks and 18 tackles (12 solo) this season. Bud Dupree has started in place of Mack for the past three games with Caleb Murphy and Kyle Kennard, a rookie, serving as backups. Neither Tuipulotu nor Dupree had a sack in Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders.
Gilman, 28, was part of a three-player rotation at safety last season and the start of this one along with Elijah Molden and Derwin James Jr. Gilman and Molden usually played the more traditional roles in deep coverage with the versatile James playing closer to the line of scrimmage.
Tony Jefferson will likely slot into Gilman’s position for the rest of the season for the Chargers, who began the season with victories over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Raiders and the Denver Broncos before losing mistake-filled games to the New York Giants and the Commanders.
