Charges filed after Lake View armed robbery that left woman shot

A man is accused of several felonies including attempted murder and armed robbery after an attack early Sunday of two 24-year-old women in Lake View.

Michael Jenkins, 19, was ordered detained until trial during a detention hearing Wednesday on attempted murder, armed robbery, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and identity theft charges.

The charges also reflect a separate armed robbery of a 21-year-old woman June 9 in the 700 block of West Roscoe Street and the theft of two vehicles June 9 and July 12.

Jenkins was identified as one of the people who allegedly shot and seriously injured a 24-year-old woman before robbing her and her 24-year-old friend in the 400 block of West Wellington Avenue, police said.

The two women had been walking to one of their homes around 12:25 a.m. when three gunmen leaped from a silver SUV, according to a police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

When they demanded the womens’ belongings the woman who was shot started to fight back, but her friend stopped her, saying “let them have” their things, the report said.

The woman who resisted began shouting and trying to run away when one of the robbers punched and shot her in the stomach, the report said.

A good Samaritan who called 911 heard the gunshot and saw the attack from his window.

“They were holding the two women against that fence. They were still screaming. One of the guys started hitting one of the women, and I immediately ran to get my phone and called 911,” Quinn Naughton told the Sun-Times.

The woman who was shot underwent immediate surgery at Illinois Masonic Medical Center after the bullet severed an artery and caused bleeding into her stomach, according to a document prosecutors read in court Wednesday at Jenkin’s initial hearing.

The three gunmen had jumped into a nearby gray Ford Edge and drove off, prosecutors said.

Location data on the car tracked it to a gas station in North Lawndale and later a McDonald’s in Austin, both where surveillance video captured Jenkins on camera and where the victim’s credit card was reportedly used, prosecutors said. An online purchase for more than $1,000 worth of shoes was also attempted using her card.

Jenkins, of the North Lawndale neighborhood, was arrested Monday in the 3700 block of South Princeton Avenue after a brief foot chase, prosecutors said. He was in possession of a loaded handgun affixed with a laser.

Jenkins’ next court date is July 21.
