A growing memorial for political activist Charlie Kirk in his birthplace of Arlington Heights will be allowed in North School Park through Sunday, park district officials decided.
Park district workers on Tuesday were scheduled to relocate the items — including flags, balloons, flowers, candles, signs and other mementos — from the center of the park to its northwest corner.
The decision to keep items left behind after Sunday’s vigil for Kirk was announced late Monday, after park district officials said earlier they planned to remove the items.
A district spokeswoman initially said under terms of a permit agreement, vigil organizers were to remove the items and clean up the site at the conclusion of the event — and if not, park district staff would.
But district officials later decided to make an exception to their policy, allowing an “unattended display area” in a different area of the park. That area will be available for viewing through Sunday, when a memorial service for the Wheeling High School alum is planned in Arizona.
