Chicago MMA fighter dies after competition in Cicero

A mixed martial arts fighter died after his bout in west suburban Cicero Friday night.

Isaac Johnson, 31, collapsed toward the end of his fight at the Matador Fighter Challenge hosted at Cicero Stadium, 1909 S. Laramie Ave., according to town officials, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and a fight promoter.

An ambulance was called at 8:38 p.m. to take Johnson to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, authorities said.

Cicero police were conducting a death investigation. An autopsy Saturday didn’t rule on Johnson’s cause or manner of death, with results pending further investigation.

Johnson, a Chicago resident, was on the bill for a heavyweight Thai boxing matchup on a night of “high-stakes, high-intensity matches,” an event website said.

“I don’t have the words to express how I feel right now,” promoter Joe Goytia said in a social media post. “All I can say is my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. We will know more as the medical report is released.”
