A Chicago police officer was fatally shot Monday night in the Chatham neighborhood, and another person was later found dead at the shooting scene, sources said.
The shooting was reported during an officer-in-distress call shortly after 8 p.m. in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue, according to police radio traffic.
Microphones peaked as officers screamed into their radios while the chaos unfolded and a radio dispatcher tried to pin down the location of the officer who was shot.
“We need an ambulance, we need an ambulance now!” one officer shouted over the radio.
The wounded officer was rushed by other officers to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to law enforcement sources and radio traffic. Another person was found dead at the scene a short time later.

Two people fled the area in a damaged Ford Explorer after the shooting, officers reported over the radio. The front passenger was armed with an automatic weapon.
Dozens of police stand vigil outside University of Chicago Medical Center in Hyde Park, where a fellow officer who was wounded on duty was taken.
There was a large police presence outside the medical center in Hyde Park late Monday night. Officers both in and out of uniform were seen embracing each other, while others were heard shouting.
