Chicago shootings leave 1 dead, 9 more wounded as summer kicks off

A man was killed and nine other people were wounded during an eight-hour spate of shootings across Chicago that ended early Friday as summer officially kicked off.

The eight shootings came as the city braced for extreme heat over the weekend, with temperatures expected to reach the high 90s. Historically, hotter temperatures have correlated with more gun violence. No one has been arrested in the overnight shootings, five of which happened in the Englewood neighborhood.

The outburst of violence started around 7:50 p.m. Thursday in Englewood, where two men were critically wounded in an attack carried out by three gunmen, Chicago police said.

The men, ages 30 and 34, were in a parking lot in the 6600 block of South Halsted Street when a car pulled up and the gunmen jumped out and opened fire, police said. The younger man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds, while the older man was struck in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital.

Around 9:10 p.m. Thursday, another man was killed in a shooting less than a mile away in Englewood, police said. The man, 32, was walking out of a store in the 600 block of West 63rd Street when someone fired at him repeatedly and fled. The man was taken to the University of Chicago hospital and pronounced dead.

A teenager was then shot while walking with a group of friends around 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of West Hobbie Street in River North, police said. The 18-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

Just over two hours later, a man was shot as he tried to break up a fight between two women in Englewood, police said. The man was struck in the shoulder around 1:45 a.m. Friday when a gunman opened fire during the altercation in an apartment in the 6700 block of South Parnell Avenue. The man, 29, was rushed to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

About 20 minutes later, a 56-year-old woman was shot about two miles away in Englewood, police said. She was standing with a group of people around 2:05 a.m. Friday when someone came up and shot her in the calf in the 6800 block of South Winchester Avenue. She was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A man, 37, was then shot at an Englewood gas station roughly 10 minutes later, police said. Three gunmen approached him around 2:15 a.m. and opened fire, striking the man in his back and elbow. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on the Near West Side, two men were shot in a yard, police said. A 29-year-old was struck in the foot, and a 33-year-old was hit in the leg. They took themselves to Stroger Hospital, where they were in good condition.

About 20 minutes later, a man was shot while he tried to confront four people who were breaking into his car on the Near South Side, police said. The man, 27, approached the burglars, who then fired at him and ran off. He was struck in the back and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.
