Chicago’s Puerto Rican Fest kicks off in Humboldt Park

The gloomy forecast wasn’t going to dampen the mood for those attending the Puerto Rican festivities over the weekend in Humboldt Park.

Mary Camargo, 63, has attended the Puerto Rican Festival for more than 40 years — a tradition she shares with her family across four generations — and a little rain wasn’t going to stop her from celebrating.

Camargo, along with her daughter, two granddaughters and great-granddaughter, walked into the park Friday afternoon geared up to enjoy food, drinks and music native to the Caribbean island.

“We’re very Puerto Rican,” said Camargo, of Humboldt Park. “Our culture was ingrained by our grandmothers, our mothers and now it’s my responsibility to pass it on to my kids, and their responsibility with their kids.”

For Camargo, showing pride in her culture is her way of pushing back against those wanting to silence Latinos.

“We have things a little easier because we’re American, so we don’t face the same challenges as other Latinos,” Camargo said. “But we are still Latinos, and it wasn’t so long ago when we weren’t able to show our flag without being targeted and punished.”

But the festival was a perfect opportunity for Latinos across the city to come together and celebrate, Camargo said. “We still have to show up for each other.”

The festival, called Fiestas Patronales Puertorriqueñas, kicked off Thursday, and the celebrations continue through Sunday. The fest at the park features dozens of food vendors, carnival rides and live music.

The highlight on Saturday is the 47th annual Puerto Rican People’s Day Parade. The parade will step off at noon at Paseo Boricua on Division Street near Campbell Avenue.

For high school student Mia Miranda, the festivities signaled the start of her summer vacation.

“Our last day of school was yesterday, so it’s the start of summer for me,” the 17-year-old said. “Even though it’s rainy, I don’t mind. I’m ready to enjoy good food and listen to some salsa.”

Tickets to the festival can be purchased for $15 online.
