The suspect in a mass shooting sent a disturbing text to his social worker just after six people were shot on a night out in Sweden, according to reports.

Shots were fired at close range into a group of teenagers in an area lined with bars and restaurants at around 2am on Saturday in Gävle.

Most of the victims were young adults and also people aged under 18.

A 14-year-old boy is being held on suspicion of attempted murder.

According to Swedish outlet Expressen, the suspect was on both the police and social services’ radar and was reported missing hours before the shooting.

In the hours after the shooting, the boy wrote to his social services worker: ‘Check the news hehe.’

Earlier in the week, the suspect reportedly told classmates at school that he was going to kill someone, but when challenged, insisted he was just joking.

All six victims were victims were taken to hospital, spokesman Tobias Ahlén-Svalbro said.

Mr Ahlén-Svalbro said: ‘So far we are working broadly and I cannot confirm that there is any connection to the criminal network environment.

‘I can’t go into any possible theories. We don’t initially suspect it’s terror-related.

‘The incident is being investigated as attempted murder. We have a large resource on site in the area, so our assessment is that there is no danger to the public, so I understand that people may be concerned.

‘It is quite close in time after the incident that the boy was taken into custody. The boy is suspected of attempted murder.’

Three people ran into nearby restaurants with gunshot wounds, with one local woman saying: ‘You don’t really want to be out late at night.

‘You’re worried about your children. What a society we’ve created. It’s crazy.’
