A California Highway Patrol officer shot a pedestrian walking on the freeway with a knife on Friday, May 23, closing all northbound lanes.
The CHP received multiple calls reporting a female pedestrian walking on the 71 freeway near Butterfield Ranch Road around 11:30 a.m.
Callers said the woman was behaving “erratically” and had a knife, CHP Captain Salvador Suarez told ABC7.
“She was armed with a knife. During that encounter, the pedestrian advanced towards the officer, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Suarez told broadcasters at the scene.
Suarez said the woman was brought to a hospital, and her injury was not life-threatening. No officers were harmed.
Officers remained on scene to investigate.
