Clippers forward Derrick Jones Jr. suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee when he collided with the Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown during the second quarter of Sunday’s loss in Boston, according to a person close to the team. He is expected to miss six weeks and will be re-evaluated at that time.
Jones was reaching for a loose ball when Brown’s arm hit his leg, sending the 6-6 Jones to the floor. He immediately grabbed his knee and rolled in pain before being helped off the court. Brown was called for a foul on the play.
Jones started all 13 games this season and was averaging a career-high 10.9 points before the collision. He is the Clippers’ third starter to get injured already this season.
Star forward Kawhi Leonard missed his eighth game when he was ruled out for Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers because of an ankle and foot sprain, and veteran guard Bradley Beal suffered a season-ending hip fracture on Nov. 8 when he took a charge in a game against the Phoenix Suns.
Rookie Kobe Sanders started in Jones’ place against the 76ers.
The Clippers were 4-9 going into Monday’s game, having lost seven of their past eight.
