Colorado weather: Air quality alert issued for Front Range, Denver area

Hot and stagnant conditions across the Front Range on Wednesday will create unhealthy ozone conditions, according to an air quality alert from state health officials.

An Ozone Action Day alert was issued Tuesday evening that covers south to Douglas County, through the Denver area and north to Larimer and Weld counties, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The alert will remain in effect through at least 4 p.m. Wednesday.

These alerts are issued when the Air Quality Index is forecast to reach unhealthy levels due to a combination of ozone, wildfire smoke and other pollutants, according to state health officials.

What is an “Ozone Action Day” and what does it mean for Coloradans?

The highest ozone concentrations on Wednesday are expected in the western metro area, including Golden and Arvada, according to the alert.

Active children, active adults and people with lung disease such as asthma should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion from noon until 8 p.m., state officials said. Everyone else should consider doing the same.
