Coloradans can anticipate more sweltering summer weather on Saturday as the temperatures are expected to hit 100 degrees or higher across metro Denver, the Front Range and Eastern Plains.
National Weather Service forecasters issued a heat advisory for the Interstate 25 corridor from Larimer to Douglas counties and most of the Eastern Plains.
Temperatures could reach a record-breaking 100 degrees in the metro and up to 103 on the plains, forecasters said. The advisory is for the hottest part of the day, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Here’s where to keep cool in metro Denver amid triple-digit heat
The record daily high for June 21 in Denver is 99 degrees, last set in 2007, according to the agency. Denver tied the record daily high on Friday at 99 degrees.
Heat-related illnesses are possible, and people should plan to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing, NWS officials said.
If venturing outside, folks should take regular breaks in the shade and limit strenuous activities to early morning and evening.
Hot, sunny weather will also cause ozone levels to rise, and an air quality alert is in effect for metro Denver until 4 p.m.
Denver, Jefferson, Douglas, western Arapahoe, western Adams, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer and Weld counties may see ozone levels reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups.
People with lung disease like asthma, along with active children and adults, should not spent a lot of time outside or participate in strenuous exercise.
Forecasters across the state also issued a Red Flag Warning for the Western Slope and southern and central Colorado counties, including Park, Lake and Chaffee counties. Strong winds, low humidity and hot weather will increase fire risk across the state, according to NWS.
