Colorado weather: Severe thunderstorm watch active for Front Range, Eastern Plains

Update 4:10 p.m.: Thunderstorms caused a rain delay at the Colorado Rockies game on Saturday afternoon and grounded flights at Denver International Airport.

Rain halted the Rockies game just before 3:30, the team said on social media.

Gusty winds up to 55 mph could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects in northeast Denver and Aurora, eastern Commerce City, Brighton and at DIA, forecasters said.

Anyone on or near a lake should get out of the water and secure loose items, forecasters said. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately.

Original story: Severe thunderstorms moving across Colorado’s Front Range and Eastern Plains could bring damaging hail, winds up to 75 mph and frequent lightning Saturday afternoon and evening.

National Weather Service forecasters issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of Colorado east of Interstate 25, including parts of metro Denver.

Scattered apple-sized hail, high winds and lightning are possible in Adams, Arapahoe, Weld, Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Elbert, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Las Animas, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Otero, Phillips, Prowers, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties, according to the agency.

The severe thunderstorm watch is active until 9 p.m.

This is a developing story.
