Colorado wildfire closes I-70 near Eagle

A wildfire burning in Eagle County closed Interstate 70 in both directions near Wolcott on Wednesday night, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office posted about the Red Canyon fire on Facebook just after 5 p.m. and announced evacuations for people living near Red Canyon and Horn Ranch north of the highway, between I-70 mile markers 151 and 154.

A firefighting helicopter arrived at the fire by 5:45 p.m. Sheriff’s officials did not say what started the fire.

Westbound I-70 is closed at mile 157, just east of Wolcott, and eastbound I-70 is closed at mile 147, just west of Eagle, for the Red Canyon fire.

Drivers are being detoured onto U.S. 6, which runs parallel to the interstate.

There is no estimated time of reopening and drivers should seek alternate routes and expect delays, state officials said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
