Couple ‘disgusted’ after discovering Morrisons cheese is crawling with maggots

Morrisons insists the rotted cheese was the result of an ‘isolated incident’

A couple who opened a new pack of Morrisons brie to find it was infested with maggots have hit out at the supermarket for offering an ‘insulting’ £3 voucher in compensation.

Cato and Sean Cooper, from Taunton West, Somerset, bought the Président-branded French cheese from a Morrisons Daily store and opened it while preparing lunch on the same day.

At least 16 larvae were crawling around the cheese, which showed other visible signs of having expired some time before.

Cato, who was ‘disgusted’ by the sight, said: ‘  stuck the brie in the bin but kept the wrapping.

“It must’ve been left out, it can’t have been left properly in the fridge. Someone must’ve left it on the shelf and perhaps it’s been left out.

‘It wasn’t anything to do with the brand, it was how it was kept outside the fridge.’

The couple contacted the supermarket via their customer service feature on Facebook but were responded to by an automated chat agent who offered a £3 voucher.

Cato added: ‘I don’t think it’s about the money. I do feel like I’ve tried contacting them a couple of times. But I feel like they couldn’t be bothered to take it seriously.

‘The £3 refund was a bit of an insult. I just thought it was stupid really. I thought they would’ve taken it a bit more seriously.

‘We won’t be buying Brie from there again.’

Morrisons said it believes the error was an ‘isolated incident’.

A spokesperson said: ‘We have been in regular contact with the customer to apologise for the delay while our franchise partner carried out its investigation.

‘We are now confident this was an isolated incident but have been back in touch with the customer this week to offer them a further gesture of goodwill.’
