Colorado State redshirt freshman quarterback Darius Curry has been suspended for the team’s season finale against Air Force for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ against Boise State on Saturday, the school announced Sunday.
CSU also said senior offensive lineman Liam Wortmann has been suspended as well.
In a statement put out Sunday by CSU, the school said as a result of the unsportsmanlike conduct of spitting on opposing players during the second half of the game, interim head coach Tyson Summers and director of athletics John Weber have suspended redshirt freshman Curry and senior Wortmann for Friday’s contest against the Falcons at Canvas Stadium.
“After having a chance to review the film following the game, I want to apologize to the Boise State football players, coach (Spencer) Danielson, and everyone at Boise State University,” Summers said in a news release.
The incident involving Curry occurred during the second half of CSU’s 49-21 loss to the Broncos, and video of it began circulating on social media after it happened following an interception thrown by Curry.
No penalties were assessed during the game itself for either incident involving Curry and Wortmann, leaving it to CSU to decide the punishment.
“These actions are unacceptable. We are all regretful for what occurred last night, and on behalf of everyone at Colorado State, I want to apologize to the Boise State football student-athletes, director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey, coach Danielson and the entire Boise State football program,” Weber said in the release.
Curry was making his first start at quarterback for the Rams after an injury to previous starter Jackson Brousseau. He was the third CSU quarterback to start a game this season.
Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi started the year as the Rams’ quarterback but was benched earlier in the season and then left the team. Brousseau started seven games in a row but was injured against New Mexico on Nov. 15, and he missed Saturday’s game against Boise State.
If Brousseau isn’t ready to play Friday against the Falcons, the next quarterback in line is Tahj Bullock. A transfer from Akron, Bullock has mostly been used as a running QB option this season. He has 31 rushing attempts, two catches and one attempted pass this season.
