CTA Red Line passenger robbed, beaten near Garfield station on South Side

Charges were pending for one suspect and police were looking for several more after a man was beaten and robbed at gunnpoint on a CTA Red Line train early Tuesday on the South Side.

The 55-year-old man was riding on a train in the 200 block of West Garfield Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. when a man pointed a firearm at him and three others struck him around the face and took his belongings, Chicago police said.

The group left the train and fled in an unknown direction, police said. One of the alleged attackers was found a short time later and arrested.

CTA received a report of a disturbance near the Garfield station which resulted in an “approximately 15 minute delay” to service, the agency said.

The man suffered injuries considered minor and was taken to Saint Bernard where he was in good condition, officials said.

Charges have not been announced but police said they were “pending.”
